Vardon School has developed a curriculum to meet the needs of the learners at our school, now and into the future.   It is based on the values of our community and also clearly reflects the values and vision identified in the revised New Zealand Curriculum.  Vardon School has integrated the Key Competencies to be a central element of all learning that takes place at our school.  Children understand what it means to be a Thinker, Contributor and Manager, they relate well to others and there is clear focus on using language, symbols and text.

The Vardon School curriculum has a strong emphasis on Numeracy and Literacy.  Teaching programmes are focused on student learning needs and the teaching approach incorporates the latest strategies to support student learning.  We seek to engage and challenge all students in their learning.

Through focused formative assessments we monitor all students’ progress and use data to inform the next steps to progress students in their learning.  Where a student needs support with their learning, be it extension or remedial, we have a range of specialised programmes and interventions. Vardon School has always had robust and effective self-review systems. It has only required some minor fine-tuning to align our system with the expectations of the National Curriculum Standards.

As an Enviro School Vardon School promotes and incorporates environmental themes into its curriculum. We do this through our gardens, Schoolgen and recycling programme.

We believe in developing life-long learners.  We instil in our students the importance of being Resilient, Resourceful, Reflective and the ability to develop strong Relationships to support their learning. Our 4Rs are central to our philosophy of developing self-regulated learners; they are learners who know what they are learning, why they are learning it and what the next steps are if they are to continue to make progress.

Vardon School works to provide opportunities to involve parents and caregivers in their child's learning.
